For as long as anyone can remember, Knuckles has been guarding the Master Emerald on the floating Angel Island, for reasons unknown even to Knuckles himself. What is assumed is that when he was a boy, Knuckles’ father taught him how to fend for himself and the emerald, and told him about how it could control the Chaos Emeralds, the reason it was created. If the Master Emerald were to fall into the wrong hands, the world would be in imminent danger. Having been tricked by Dr. Eggman, Knuckles first thought Sonic and Tails were the bad guys, but they proved otherwise when they helped him recover the Master Emerald. Later, Knuckles wanted to know exactly why he was chosen to guard it, but figured it would be best if he stayed uninformed.

Knuckles is almost purely a loner. Wild in nature, he’s somewhat antisocial, although not by choice; because of his usual isolation from the rest of the world, whilst protecting the Master Emerald within it’s shrine on Angel Island. Sometimes he will leave the island to find the current whereabouts of the Chaos Emeralds, or clue himself in on the ancient history and archeology of the planet Earth so he can better understand the way the Master Emerald and the world’s energy works.

Because of his common isolation from everyone else, Knuckles isn’t exactly the best person to speak to. Generally uncaring, brutally honest, stern and demanding; he can be hard to get along with. But even so, Knuckles is a purely good, very modest and spiritual person. He believes there’s a bit of good in everybody and is willing to give anyone at least one chance, even if it has led him to be a bit gullible.

• Even though he isn’t in the public often, Knuckles picked up two accessories on his travels into civilization that he enjoys wearing: his shades and cowboy hat. They aid him quite well on a sunny day by the altar; since Knuckles isn’t the biggest fan of intense sunlight.
• Although he protects mystical gems on a daily basis, Knuckles also finds beauty in the powerless ones. He takes on treasure hunting as a hobby, which he’ll trade in for money when he goes into town.
