Mephiles along with Iblis (the two halves of the god Solaris) was created in a lab accident 10 years ago conducted by the Duke of Soleanna, a project that was supposed to bring his wife back from the dead. The “Flames of Disaster” of Solaris ended up causing an explosion, killing almost everyone except the Duke and his daughter, Elise, the princess of Soleanna. The duke was forced to seal the premature Iblis inside his daughter so destruction would not come, telling her in his dying words not to cry, or he would be released. Shadow the Hedgehog ended up sealing Mephiles in the Scepter of Darkness when traveling into the past, having already met him in the present.

Mephiles is a merciless demon with a twisted sense of humor and an especial hatred of Shadow the Hedgehog. He is highly intelligent and is the mind and will of Solaris, Iblis being the pure destructive power. He is also immortal, able to take countless beatings from Shadow and gunshots from Omega. His tricky and dishonest yet seemingly civilized and intellectual demeanor allows him to trick most people (excluding Shadow) into doing his bidding, as he did with Silver the Hedgehog. He also has no mouth, and was resurrected by, ironically, Shadow’s shadow. Since Iblis is most of the muscle in Solaris, Mephiles alone is considerably weaker in comparison and somewhat of a coward, tricking people into doing his dirty work and stabbing Sonic in order to kill him, a blatant sign of cowardice. Since he only craves destruction, he is visibly very anxious to join Iblis to get his strength and destroy all of reality.
